Are you ready to be an Attendance H.E.R.O.?

What’s an Attendance HERO?
HERO is an acronym for Here Every day and Ready to learn On time! Attendance HEROs bring
students’ favorite super heroes to life and encourage them to be at school every day!

Why is Attendance so Important?
Missing too much school negatively impacts student learning. Falling behind happens quickly, and it’s
difficult to catch up. Low attendance often means students don’t read at grade-level—an indicator
they may not graduate high school on time. Students who “only” miss 10% (18 days) of the school
year are considered chronically absent. For each day missed, it takes 1-1/2 days to catch up.

What is United Way Doing?
United Way has an attendance intervention program—Every Student, Every Day—that offers
individualized support for chronically absent students and their families.
Every Student, Every Day, working closely with the San Diego Unified School District and Lemon Grove School District, we are now in 15 school sites. Last year, we helped every student on our case load attend an average of 2 more weeks of school—that’s more learning for all students!
